The Dugway Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) Part B hazardous waste storage Permit was issued in 1994, and reissued in 2005. The Permit authorizes operation of three Facilities, the Central Hazardous Waste Storage Facility, Igloo G Storage, and the Dugway Thermal Treatment Facility (DTTF). Conditions in the Permit include requirements for waste analysis, security, inspection, training, preparedness prevention, contingency, emergency response and operational parameters. The Permit also identifies solid waste management units (SWMUs) and hazardous waste management units (HWMUs) subject to RCRA corrective action and clean-up requirements.
Central Hazardous Waste Storage Facility
The Central Hazardous Waste Storage Facility (CHWSF) stores containerized hazardous waste from the Dugway Facility generated from maintenance, training and testing programs. The CHWSF is operating under the control of the Dugway Directorate of Environmental Programs and is managed by a contractor who is responsible for the daily activities at the CHWSF.
Igloo G Hazardous Waste Storage Building
The Igloo G hazardous waste storage building stores chemical agent hazardous waste munitions that are called range recovered munitions and munitions that will be used at Dugway for training and testing. Additionally, Chemical agents and industrial chemicals are stored at the Igloo G building.
Dugway Thermal Treatment Facility
The Dugway Thermal Treatment Facility (DTTF), informally known as the Open Burn and Open Detonation (OB/OD) Facility, is used for treatment of waste munitions and waste explosives. The waste munitions and explosives are generated on site or are transported to Dugway from Air Force operations. The DTTF is located south of the Carr Area at DPG and consists of a graded circular area about 2000 feet in diameter with three Burn Trays and clear areas for open detonation pits. Dugway can accumulate wastes for treatment at hazardous waste storage magazines located just west of the DTTF in Magazines 41 and 42.
